Google Now Launcher arrives on the Play Store
With the Nexus 5, Google debuted a new software feature which let it’s users say “Okay, Google” to initiate a search from any home screen. Initially this was only limited to the Nexus 5, and though people found ways to get it on their other Nexus devices via leaks and unofficial releases, the internet search giant itself has now finally released the launcher as a standalone app in the Google Play Store.
Google Now Launcher on Nexus 10
The launcher, which was formerly known as “Google Home” or the “Google Experience Launcher,” has been renamed to “Google Now Launcher,” a reference to Google’s predictive search card interface. The new launcher is an official way to easily get a close-to-stock experience on any device, and it pushes users toward performing more Google searches. It also takes advantage of new Android 4.4 features like transparent status and system bars. Saying “OK Google” while on the home screen will trigger the voice recognition to start listening for commands.
The Google Now launcher is a simple launcher, but makes accessing the already handy feature that much easier, and though many of us still have to wait for it, the availability is slowly expanding.
Google Now Launcher on Nexus 4
At this time, the listing claims that it is only available for Nexus or Google Play Edition devices running Android 4.4. So yes, the Nexus 4, 7 and 10 can now officially enjoy this new beautiful launcher. Hopefully support for more devices will be added soon.
